The Seven Sacraments

Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship to Christ. Whether we are baptised as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church’s way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God.

Holy Orders

In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the priest or deacon being ordained vows to lead Catholics by bringing them the other sacraments, by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing other means to holiness.

Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation, or Confession, has three elements: conversion, confession, and celebration. In it, we find God’s unconditional forgiveness; as a result we are called to forgive others.

The Eucharist

When the priest says the words of consecration, the bread and wine become the true body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. As we receive Christ’s Body and Blood, we are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. This is the source and the summit of our Catholic faith.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a Sacrament of mature commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. It is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation. It is most often associated with strengthening the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. This sacrament also includes the Last Rites.

Holy Matrimony

The Sacrament of Marriage is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of a husband and wife speaks mirrors Christ’s love for His Church.
